Founded in 1989, British skincare brand Elemis was one of the first pioneers of a holistic approach to beauty. The idea for this luxury line of skincare products came from entrepreneur and investor Linda Steiner. Linda\u2019s goal was to create a line of products \u201cas near to nature as possible\u201d with \u201cno expense spared.\u201d She was soon joined by co-founders Noella Gabriel, Sean Harrington, and Oriele Frank, who helped turn Elemis into a sought-after brand that is now available in over 45 countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brand\u2019s focus is delivering proven results with feel-good skincare products combined with cutting-edge patented technology. But do Elemis skincare products really deliver results? To answer this question, we\u2019ll have to evaluate the Elemis product formulations through a scientific lens. That means we\u2019ll dive into the research that supports (or doesn\u2019t support) the ingredients used in these products. If you take a look at the ingredient lists for Elemis skincare products \u2014 which are in order of descending concentrations \u2014 you\u2019ll notice that all of the \u201ckey\u201d ingredients are typically listed after the preservative phenoxyethanol, which cannot be used in concentrations more than 1%. That means you\u2019re getting less than 1% of those key beneficial ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, many of the Elemis skincare products contain more fragrance than key ingredients! One example is the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel. If you look at the ingredient list, Fragrance (Parfum) comes before papain (the enzyme derived from papaya extract) and pineapple extract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One reason this is problematic is because the low concentrations of key ingredients mean that there\u2019s a low chance they will provide benefits to your skin. Don\u2019t get us wrong, more doesn\u2019t always equal better. This is true with the ingredient retinol, which is effective even at low concentrations. However, the brand could definitely use higher concentrations of ingredients like cucumber extract, avocado oil, and the other botanical extracts that they claim are key ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another problem with the fragrance in Elemis skincare products is that all fragrance ingredients (whether natural or synthetic) impart scent through a volatile reaction, and this natural reaction almost always causes a sensitizing reaction on skin. In fact, according to a 2016 publication in the scholarly journal <\/span>Dermatitis<\/span><\/i>, nearly 80 essential oils have caused contact allergy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you don\u2019t have a full blown reaction to the ingredient, the damage may still be occurring every day. Ultimately, this can cause mild problems for your skin in the short term and worse problems in the long term. This is something to keep in mind before purchasing Elemis skincare products, especially if you have sensitive skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, the brand does keep out most other potentially harmful ingredients that can cause unnecessary irritation and dryness.
